Good Posture and Why It Is So Important!
By Suzi Konopka
Picture yourself as a child sitting in a chair…do you remember your Mom, Dad or Grandparents reminding you to sit up straight? For a good reason…posture is very important in the health of our bodies.
Our society has become a very droopy society when it comes to sitting or standing tall. When you hear “we are proud to be Americans” we should show it in our physical stature as well. Let’s stand tall. Be proud. Be healthy.
Why is posture so important to the physical health of the human body?
When the body is positioned correctly there is minimal strain on the muscles, ligaments, bones and joints. Your internal organs are not compressed, blood vessels are not pressed, nerves are not irritated and you look good ;o)
The better one’s posture, the less likely that the individual will suffer from spine-related discomfort.
Improper Posture research shows that many people suffer from upper back, lower back and neck region discomfort. Poor posture and muscle weakness due to our society’s sedentary lifestyle contribute to this discomfort. Unfortunately, each of these factors adversely effects the other. Muscle weakness can result from poor posture and poor posture can result from muscle weakness. Fact: Poor posture makes us tired.
Tips for Practicing Good Posture…
-When driving, sit firmly against the seat with your shoulders pressed gently back against the seat.
-Wear good footwear.
-Maintain a healthy weight.
-Eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, drink water. Poor diet can cause fatigue and slow healing.
-When sitting at your computer-be aware of your head position.
-Exercise.
-When using a phone, use a speaker phone if possible or hold the phone in your hand, never between your head and your shoulder.
-When exercising, always exercise both sides of the body to prevent imbalance from one sided strength.
-When walking, keep your head in neutral, (hold an imaginary tennis ball under your chin), your shoulders back and walk tall.
-Get plenty of sleep. Sleep is the body’s way of recharging itself.
-When watching TV, be aware of your head position. Shoulders down and back, head in a neutral position.
-Practice good posture. Making changes in your daily habits is not easy. Through practice though you can make the changes necessary to prevent injury. Sitting hour after hour can result in special problems, that can aggravate conditions that might not have otherwise been a problem. Get up and move around - STRETCH.
Celebrate Life - Stand Tall.
